Williamsburg is named after William of Orange. Williamsburg was part of Craven County; was at the beginning around 20,000 acres. Later was all divided into different counties.

County Seat: Kingstree

Towns/cities/communities: Andrews, Greeleyville, Hemingway, Kingstree, Land Stuckey, Cades, Gourdin, Hebron, Indiantown, Nesmith, Outland, Rhems, Salters, Trio, Piney Forest.

* Williamsburg, District, South Carolina situated toward the East part of the state and contains 1,200 square miles. Lynches Creek runs on its Northeast border and Santee River on the Southeast. Drained by Black River and Cedar Creek and their branches. Capital, Kingstree. There were in 1840, neat cattle 17,632, sheep 3,183, swine 29,035; wheat 4,460 bushels, produced, indian corn 200,312, oats 5,224, potatoes 60,849, rice 95,500 pounds, cotton 515, 038; 7 stores, capital $38,500; 9 flouring mills, 9 saw mill. Capital in manufacturing $19,988. 4 academies 70 students, 12 schools 161 scholars. Population whites 3,327, slaves 6,968, free colored 32; total 10,327.
